Japanese Ghost Story

For this project, I wanted to recreate the feeling I have whenever I enter the Fine Arts building alone. I always have the feeling that I'm being watched by someone or something. I decided to create my ghost girls to create that eerie feeling of the unknown in the building. I especially love how when the viewer moves with their device the girls move with them. That added to the effectiveness of my idea and really gave the viewers a sense of being watched.

Project Proposal

So far my idea which is subject to change will be located at the front window and elevator of the 5th floor of the fine arts building. Our floor is always a little desolate, so I wanted to "transform" it into a whimsical and kind of creepy place with demons from Japanese folklore. I always feel like im being watched when I'm walking through the hallway alone, and this seems like a funny but true feeling I have in the building.

Reading #7: The AR AD Takeover

The purpose of the AR/AD Takeover is to reclaim the space taken up by advertisers. By superimposing the artists own art/ message, the viewer has the option of blocking out commercial advertisements to view something that is more pleasant or politically stimulating. By doing this, viewers are given an escape from our consumer reality that seems to control everything we do and what we believe defines us. I love this idea of being able to block commercial advertising (even though I enjoy certain advertisements), and promotes self awareness by refusing to be controlled by what we buy and the messages we see.

3 Articles: 3d and virtual art

One of the readings brings up an interesting point: everything is made so easy for us, is art something that should be included in that list? Is art that is digitally printed and can be mass produced still considered art? To me I think it depends on the context - what was the creative process of making the product and what is the functionality of it?

Virtual Reality: Reading Assignment #5

Illusions of space in art has evolved from 2d paintings, 3d pictures, live stages, to 4d movie theaters. Virtual reality has become a part of our everyday living to where seeing projected pictures right before our eyes is the norm. This article was interesting to me because I constantly wonder how far movies will go to create the perfect "real" experience. I enjoy interacting with virtual reality, but only for so long because it's something I can see but not touch. My question is - will virtual reality take over the real experience of actually visiting a place or interaction with a person or object?

Pixels and Places: Reading #4

"Video art is the medium for emphasizing the variability of a public space." This is the main idea of Schreuder's article as she explains the different types of video art in public spaces from malls, parks, commercial areas and streets. Video art was originally used for commercial and information purposes, but was re harnessed by artists who wanted to create new meanings of their own. By  interrupting public ads and commercial areas, they bring new meanings to the industry's original message. Artists seek to bring down the advertising industry and recapture the space to reclaim it for the public.

It's wonderful how these artists are able to utilize these public spaces to assert their own thoughts and views of media representation. I also think video art is an affective medium in creating new space as well as new emotions to the space that comes with it. It's unfortunate how some view this type of public art as unappealing, because video art is such a strong form of expression as well as a way for people to interact with the environment. Video art is about the collective experience, and can hold different meanings depending on the individual.

Reading Assignment #3

James Bridle's Waving at the Machines is not so much an article about the physical vs. the virtual world, but by how one is influenced by the other. It's interesting how a person never thinks about how fashion, street art, and other types of popular culture incorporate computer/digital aesthetics. It seems as if pixelated design has been done so often that they are of the norm. I also love the idea of what we do in the virtual world can have a meaning entirely of it's own. What does it mean when we poke someone on facebook? There is no direct translation, but an interesting type of interaction that we have gotten used to quickly. Engaging in technology creates different types of interaction and relationships that changes the way we behave. Bridle seems to think that this is a good thing, but are there certain aspects of engaging with each other in person that should preserved?

Bruce Sterling's Essay on the New Aesthetic talks about the British art form the New Aesthetic, a sharable concept born on the internet. It is an art form about transformation and reconstruction from ads to games and devices. It is not so much about the machines but about the people behind them, creating and making new meanings of art in society. We have to get in touch with technology to decipher the imagery and instead of using modern aesthetics think of new ones.

Future Composition: My Environment in 20 Years

The Modern Irving
In 20 Years I will most likely still be living in San Francisco. I chose to update Irving Street because to me it represents gradual change of a neighborhood that is physically close to my family. I believe that transportation will have progressed, perhaps not to the point of a flying bus with wings but definitely vehicles such as a one wheel motorcycle and more technologically advanced bus stops.
