Pixels and Places: Reading #4

"Video art is the medium for emphasizing the variability of a public space." This is the main idea of Schreuder's article as she explains the different types of video art in public spaces from malls, parks, commercial areas and streets. Video art was originally used for commercial and information purposes, but was re harnessed by artists who wanted to create new meanings of their own. By  interrupting public ads and commercial areas, they bring new meanings to the industry's original message. Artists seek to bring down the advertising industry and recapture the space to reclaim it for the public.

It's wonderful how these artists are able to utilize these public spaces to assert their own thoughts and views of media representation. I also think video art is an affective medium in creating new space as well as new emotions to the space that comes with it. It's unfortunate how some view this type of public art as unappealing, because video art is such a strong form of expression as well as a way for people to interact with the environment. Video art is about the collective experience, and can hold different meanings depending on the individual.
