Reading #2: Cut and Paste

Collage is extremely interesting because it is an art form that has transformed from Dada’ist to propaganda, advertisement, fine art, adolescent art, and to contemporary art. Collage’s historical roots from the 60’s were meant to shock and provoke emotion, which is something I love because the idea reflects the Dada movement by combining and reworking new media to create a new form of thinking. It was very interesting to read about the shifts in the uses of collage making, even looking at Facebook where our thoughts, pictures, moments in time, and interests are combined to create what is seemingly a collage of our lives.
I think the collage medium had been overlooked after the late 90‘s since it had become such a “mainstream” art in advertisement as well as in adolescents. As contemporary artists are re harnessing the practice of collage making the value seems to grow higher as they take new approaches to the medium. What my question is this - When collage seemed to become “mainstream” and used by everyone, did the value and practice of the art depreciate? Did the individual practice become not so individual because everyone was doing it?
